History

campbell house museum

All facades are of finished and painted brick, except the unpainted west facade. Although it looks like a row house, it was never attached to anything. The Campbell House represents an important transitional period in housing design. Physical investigation of the building’s fabric helps fill in the gaps in the archival record. Changes to the interior became visible after careful examination of plaster walls, construction materials, and shadow marks that often indicated an earlier location of doorways, walls, and stairs. Detailed paint analysis throughout the house provided the color palette and patterns for wall stenciling, woodwork and other decoration.

The Restoration

This collection from the St. Louis Circuit Court contains the records from the Hazlett K. Campbell estate case that began in 1938. The collection is made up of testimony and evidence from individuals (both legitimate and not legitimate) making claim to the Campbell estate. Primarily consists of genealogical records–birth, death and marriage certificates in addition to photographs, personal letters and other documents dating from the 1760s to the 1930s.

CT, 34 arrests have been made by law enforcement on the UT Austin campus, according to an X post from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The University of Texas at Austin Police Department said in a statement on X Wednesday evening that "the dispersal order at the South Mall has ended. All University rules are still in effect." The board said it is "urgently working" with Shafik to resolve the unrest on campus and "rebuild the bonds of our community."

This immersive dance-theatre experience invites audiences to choose to act as witness or accomplice to the characters’ stories. An immersive horror opera, Tales of the Grotesque invites visitors to explore Victorian Toronto through the eyes of literature’s most twisted author, Edgar Allan Poe, and come tapping at the door to the unknown. When her dreams invade the waking world, a misfit storyteller leaves high society behind as she’s whisked away to a universe of her own making.

The Columbia University Board of Trustees released a statement Wednesday saying they strongly support President Minouche Shafik, who has faced calls for her resignation amid intense pressure to rein in days-long protests. In an evening update, the Texas Department of Public Safety said that 34 arrests had been made by law enforcement on the campus as of 9 p.m. The university "supports free speech through open dialogue that is respectful and constructive," the officials said. Graffiti described as “hateful” has been painted on campus, the officials said. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos."

Joined by a quarrelsome fairy and the boy who taught her to fly, she quickly discovers that a life of adventure comes at a price. With the memory of her family fading, she and her companions must outwit a hungry crocodile, brawl with pirates, and find the magic within themselves to return home again, or remain in the land of make-believe forever. This is a beautiful house in downtown St. Louis which contains all the original furnishings.

The large main house, with offset service wing, and the adjacent carriage house were carefully designed to suit particular functions. Campbell House Museum, located in the oldest surviving building from the Town of York, is a vibrant public space that inspires and educates visitors through its history, collections, and unique context in the heart of downtown Toronto. House has been meticulously restored to how it appeared in the Campbells day. Furniture has been placed where it was, the carpeting and wallpaper recreated, and paint analysis performed on the walls, ceilings, and woodwork, producing the exact same colors and patterns there in the 1880s. Citizens expressed concern for the fate of Lucas Place’s last surviving residence.

There is a multi-purpose room that can be utilized for bagged lunches. Buses are authorized to park at meters on the street without paying a parking meter. In 1853, having never lived in the house, Hall sold it to Mrs. Cornelia Wilson. Unusually for a woman of her time, Wilson owned the house in her own right, living there for 18 months with her husband. As anyone who lives in an old house knows, restoration and maintenance has no end-date. For more information on the restoration, please contact the Museum or click here to make a donation.

A local history group called the William Clark Society began to organize an effort to save the building and its contents as a museum. The committee formed for the task included architectural historian John Bryan, eminent Missouri historian Charles van Ravenswaay and director of the St. Louis Art Museum Perry Rathborne. Limited free parking is available in the lot directly next to the Museum. Street parking is available at parking meters (free on Sunday) on both Locust and 15th Streets.

At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. No protesters or officers have been reported injured, police said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at the University of Southern California. The  Campbell Museums' mission is to interpret and preserve the history of the Campbell area from its early beginnings to today and to relate that history within the context of the Santa Clara Valley region. Founded in 1916, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture is the largest cultural organization in the Inland Northwest, serving more than 100,000 visitors a year.

WIF welcomes everyone to join this FREE interactive showcase and have conversations with emerging and established creatives. INSIGHT events are designed to uplift experiences and spaces for marginalized communities. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested approximately 50 protestors at the University of Southern California after campus police gave a dispersal order to demonstrators, according to a CNN crew at the scene. A photographer was among those arrested during clashes between protesters and law enforcement on the University of Texas at Austin campus on Wednesday. Other buildings on the campus in Arcata are at risk of being occupied, and protesters “have shown a willingness” to lock themselves in facilities and steal equipment, the officials said.

Flexible appointments for these programs and tours are available every day of the year except national holidays. The rate for groups of 10 or more is $5 per student, schools are encouraged to contact the Museum to discuss pricing. The final major alterations came in 1867, when the Campbells embarked on a grand tour of Europe. While they were away, Robert had the parlor reconfigured, added two bays to both the main house and the flounder wing, and added a third floor to the flounder. The three surviving sons made only a few changes of their own, converting the house to electricity and adding a bathroom to the second floor. The California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt campus will remain closed through the weekend as protesters, including "unidentified non-students," continue to occupy two buildings, school officials said in an update.

Campbell business records can also be found in the Sublette papers. The original house was of a large townhouse design — a rectangular plan, three floors with an attic and English basement and a two story flounder wing at the rear. The cast iron balcony on the front of the house is Gothic in detail, while the front entryway is in the Greek-Revival style popular during the 1840s.

To the right of the dark wood-paneled entry hall is a light, gilded French reception room where Grace Campbell received her visitors. To the left, the library’s dark wooden beams and inglenook fireplace provide a cozy atmosphere for informal evenings at home, as well as formal events. Four steps lead to a large dining room with a fireplace surrounded by blue and white Dutch tiles. A deep veranda around the back of the house affords a view of the Spokane River below.

Business correspondence, company ledgers, copy books, financial reports and family letters form the bulk of the collection, which spans the period from the early 1830s to the 1920s. Microfilm copies (30 reels) available at the Campbell House. Restoration Work BeginsIn February 2000, the restoration of the House started with the packing and storing of the entire Museum collection. The exterior restoration was complete by mid-2001 (the interior and exterior restoration of the Carriage House was completed in 1998).
